This topiary sculpture is dedicated to Dr. Ronald McNair, acclaimed physicist and second African American in space for NASA, who never got the opportunity to continue his exploration due to his untimely death on the Challenger shuttle in 1986. This topiary is my take on Dr. McNair's spirit being able to explore the cosmos, visiting different galaxies beyond our own, hence 'Other Worldly'. This is from his perspective as he travels though space and time. The whirling spirals represents the multitude of galaxies he could visit. The concept to create this topiary, derived from Fibonacci's sequence, playing the negative space, and mixed with multiple vanishing points. Depending on where you're standing, you may see something totally different than someone else from a different perspective. This is known as the Gibson technique, which creates an effect I call illusion topiary. Walk around, or orbit the sculpture multiple times. There are black holes, planets, stars, hearts, even a saxophone, and much more. What do you see?
